If you’ve just started a business and need some advice on where to start with your new office, look no further.

Firstly, remember to buy insurance. You’ll need either contents or property insurance – or a policy that covers both, if you own the property. If you are only letting, you’ll need a contents-specific policy. This is very important as if something happens to your office and you don’t have it, you’ll be liable to pay for the damage straight out of your own pocket. This is something not many of us could afford – whereas the £100 a year you’ll pay for insurance is.

Secondly, consider what type of furniture you’d like/need. Remember not to skimp on the office chairs. After all, your staff will be sitting in them for many hours each day and need to be comfy. They need to be not too comfy however, or you might find them taking a little afternoon nap!

The furniture and décor will need to be tied to the impression you want to make when people visit. Do you want an air of fun and laid-back relaxation? Or do you want to promote a professional, hard-working attitude? Neither are right or wrong, but you’ll definitely need to consider them when you make these decisions.

Do you want to install kitchen facilities in your office? That’s another question you’ll need to ask yourself. if you’re renting, it may already come with these but if not, you’ll need to consider at least providing a kettle and cups for your staff. A microwave is a good idea as well, as it allows them to bring their own lunch in to heat up. A fridge is a must, if you’re going to offer tea/coffee-making facilities, so don’t forget that.

Although there’s a lot more to consider than just these points, they’ll get you off on the right foot and provide the basic template you need upon which to build your ideal office.
